When music’s brightest stars come together, we tend to expect the unexpected. From first impressions on the red carpet, to candid interviews, to performances and acceptance speeches -- we are always on our toes.
Over the past few years, we have seen everything from exotic outfits to the most bizarre performances. We all remember when Lady Gaga was escorted onto the red carpet in an egg. Just a year later, Nicki Minaj took to the stage for what appeared to be an exorcist interpretation of her songs “Roman Holiday” and “Roman’s Revenge.”
However, the Grammys have been shocking us for decades. In 2001, Elton John joined Eminem for a controversial performance of “Stan” despite homophobic accusations of the rapper. In 1998, Bob Dylan’s Grammy performance of “Love Sick” was crashed by a backup performer.
Each year, they find new ways to leave our jaws on the floor. Whether it’s a strange fashion choice or a major cultural statement, the artists are always surprising us.
Here are the Top 10 Shockers of the 56th Annual Grammy Awards.

8. Daft Punk in silence
While we are used to hearing emotional speeches after each Grammy win, it was refreshing to see a duo accept their awards in silence. The Daft Punk robots are always sporting head gear, and apparently they never break character. Instead they left all of the talking to counterparts, Pharrell Williams and Paul Williams.

7. Missing faces
We all expected Justin Bieber to be absent from the party, but what about the other familiar faces? Falling short of nominations, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez were not in attendance on music’s biggest night. Despite winning a few awards, Justin Timberlake was not there either.

6. Unusual pairs
The Grammys treated us to an array of unexpected collaborations this year. Who would have thought to put Robin Thicke with Chicago? Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Madonna? Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons? Better yet, who would have thought that all these collaborations would sound great?

5. Tribute let downs
Along with the misspelling of Cory Monteith’s name, we got a dull Lou Reed tribute from Jared Leto. While we have seen plenty of awe-inspiring tributes in past years, but this year seemed to lack that flare.

Gone are the days of brightly colored hair and giant hearts. This year, Katy Perry took to the stage dressed as a witch for her performance of “Dark Horse.” She even took a break to pole-dance on a broom!

1. Queen Latifah marries 34 couples
It’s probably safe to say that the most memorable surprise of the night came during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance of “Same Love.” Who better to officiate a few dozen weddings than Queen Latifah? Madonna got in on the act as well.
