The Simpsons debuted on December 17, 1989. It has since become the longest-running animated television series and the longest-running American sitcom.
The series started out as a short on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 and ran for three seasons. The shorts became so popular that it turned into a primetime TV series.
The Simpsons is a humorous depiction of the middle-class American family. The Simpson family consists of Homer, who is lazy and dim-witted and loves doughnuts. He is married to Marge, who is a stereotypical housewife. Their kids are troublemaking smart aleck Bart, intelligent Lisa and baby Maggie.
The Simpsons has broadcast 541 episodes and is currently running its 25th season with a 26th season confirmed. The Simpsons Movie was also released to theaters in 2007 and grossed $527 million. It has won 27 Emmy awards and 30 Annie awards during its run.
The show has became famous for iconic catchphrases such as "D'oh" and "Ay caramba." "D'oh" was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2001.
