We all know him. We’ve seen his Caddyshack. We’ve seen him as Egon in Ghostbusters. Even us Millennials have seen his most recent films: Bedazzled, Year One and The Ice Harvest. Who else can put a better spin on these comedies than the well-loved, comedic Harold Ramis?

In the A.V. Club’s tribute, Ramis is described as of a clever comedian who used wit as his trademark. In his 1972 audition for Second City, Ramis discovered his strategic, almost brainy comedy compared to the brawny John Belushi, yet Ramis plunged headway into Hollywood with his first directed film Caddyshack in 1980. Four years later, Ramis starred as Egon in Ghostbusters before the sequel Ghostbusters II in 1989.

Ramis’ directing career continued to skyrocket with Groundhog Day, and Ramis bolstered his success with comedians from Bill Murray to Chevy Chase to Billy Crystal and Robert De Niro. Throughout his career, Ramis has created a legacy of comedy that will last for generations onward.

On this day, celebrities have mourned his death.
