Essence Magazine, known for celebrating black women, hosted an event honoring black men. The ceremony recognized African American men who have made outstanding achievements in the world of film. The ceremony was simply called “Black Men in Hollywood.”

Emotional moments were commonplace during the event. Sidney Poitier, who broke barriers in the 1950s and 1960s in Hollywood, was helped to the stage by Tyler Perry. Poitier received a standing ovation and acknowledged the celebrities who gave him such a warm reception. The actor said that he remembered a time when we “gathered in a basement church,” according to the Associated Press.

Spike Lee also spoke at the event. He discussed the making of mainstream movies, and the struggles that one might find in the future. Tyler Perry introduced some humor into the room, and spoke about the “healthy” debate that might continue.

The “Black Men in Hollywood” event included a performance by singer, Ledisi. Essence Magazine’s ceremony annually holds an event honoring black women.
