U.S. figure skating champ falls hard, but finishes routine

American figure skating champion Jeremy Abbott fell hard during the men’s short program, but managed to finish his routine.

TheAssociated Press reported that Abbott took a hard fall on an attempted quadruple toe loop Thursday.

USA Today noted that the 28-year-old was down on the ice for about 10 seconds. However, he was able to roll on his side while clutching his right hip and pulled himself up and to continue his program.

Abbot finished to a rousing applause from the crowd.

"I'm not in the least bit ashamed," he said. "I stood up and I finished that program and I'm proud of my effort and I'm proud of what I did under the circumstance."

Abbott scored a 72.58, which puts him in 15th place. His U.S. teammate Jason Brown finished sixth.

Abbott won the bronze medal in the team competition. Prior to these Games, he represented the U.S. in 2010 in Vancouver and placed ninth.

The men’s free skate competition is Friday evening.
