UC Berkeley football player Ted Agu dies at 21

University of California Berkeley football player, Ted Agu, died Friday morning after a practice run with his team. The defensive lineman had shown no signs of health problems prior to Friday.

After struggling to complete the workout Agu was escorted by the UC medical staff via golf cart back to the stadium. After administering CPR the paramedics took him to Alta Bates hospital where he died at age 21.

According to SFGate Agu was not a scholarship player, but instead made the team as a walk-on after trying out his freshman year. He played in seven games and earned six tackles last season.

Players and coaches were extremely shocked and overwhelmed by the news. According to AssociatedPress hours after Agu’s death coach, Sunny Dykes, said, “This is one of those tragedies that no one can understand and comprehend.”

Agu was a public health major who had aspirations to go on to medical school. The official cause of death will be reported in four to six weeks.
