The 2014 Winter Olympics on Sochi, Russia have not been performing as well in the ratings compared to past games. The ratings for the winter games have been slipping.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Sunday’s prime-time coverage only brought it 21.1 million viewers and a 4.8 rating which is a 9% decrease for the games in viewers. This is also almost a 20% decrease in viewership from the Vancouver games.

The 4.8 rating is also the lowest rating for this point in any games in Winter Olympics history but it is not the lowest in total number of viewers.

The Wrap added that overall the 2014 Olympics are 15 percent off in the demo from the previous 2010 and 2012 games when it comes to total viewers.

The United States medal count is currently seventh overall amongst nations competition in the games which might be a reason for the dip in viewership. The Olympics likely saw a spike in ratings when it came to the United States and Russia coming down to a shot out in hockey, which was talked about on both social media and in the news for hours after the final shot was made.
