Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is set to appear in a new production of Hamlet.
Benedict Cumberbatch has signed on to play Hamlet on stage in London. Producer Sonia Friedman has called Benedict Cumberbatch a "gifted actor." The production will be directed by Lyndsey Turner who had success with previous plays. According to the Daily Mail, Sonia Friedman said in a statement issued by the Barbican, “I am thrilled to be producing Hamlet with Lyndsey and Benedict and we are delighted that the magnificent Barbican has agreed to present the show.”
The Barbican has 1,166 seats. There is already a demand to see the show, and producers are planning for Cumberbatch’s Hamlet to be one of the theatrical highlights of the 2014-2015 season. According to The Guardian, Cumberbatch follows in the tradition of actors like David Tennant, Rory Kinnear, and Jude Law.
Cumberbatch has previously starred on stage at the National Theatre in Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle. Cumberbatch was nominated of a Golden Globe Award for his work in Sherlock. Ticket details for Hamlet will be announced later in May.
