My two girls and I go on stay-cations as often as we can. I mean why not, were live in Southern California where it’s sunny and beautiful about 95% of the time. Recently the three of us had an opportunity to stay at The La Jolla Hotel, Kimpton. It happened to be on one of the few rainy, chilly (59-62 degrees) days we have had here this season in San Diego and I really wasn’t in the mood after a long week of work and carting the kids around. I wanted to sit by pool lounging in the sun and that wasn’t going to be an option this weekend.

Madeline aka Maddy is my 13 year old and Anna is my 8 year old and they (we) wanted to make the most of our nights stay at the Kimpton. So, it was on. Maddy brought her ukulele and Anna brought her little sister attitude. It was bound to be a good time and it was.

As we pulled up to valet parking, (you don’t really have a choice in the matter and it’s $28 per day), the staff greeted us right away. We were immediately impressed with all of them, especially the young lady at the reservation desk. She noticed Maddy’s ukulele and told her if she played a song, she give me (Maddy’s mom), a beer. So of course I made Maddy play. I knew she played, but had no idea that she actually sang. Definitely a proud mama moment. It seemed everyone in the lobby was happy with it and Maddy earned her mom a beer, what better way to start a stay-ca!

Considering the weather wasn’t the best for the beach or pool, we headed up to check out our room. It was pretty cool, not huge, but comfortable and the girls were super impressed with the fact that there is no wall separating the shower and the room, just glass. I was a bit hesitant until I noticed button that brought down a shade over the glass. Then, I agreed. Yes cool.

We hung out in the room and on the balcony for a while enjoying the view, before heading out to downtown La Jolla to meet some friends for dinner at Public House. All of enjoyed the food and the adults really enjoyed the vast selection of beers. They have some really good brews on tap if you like that sort of thing.

The Kimpton provides all the makings for a s’more and the fire pits are outside. This made of an early evening in Downtown La Jolla, because Anna wanted s’mores at the fire pit. Due to the “bad” weather there were no fire pits or s’mores that evening at Hotel La Jolla.

Anna was super disappointed until we told her we’d go up to Cusp (hotel restaurant) for dessert and listen to live music. Maddy had been up there earlier and was impressed by the singer, Trent Hancock, so she had no problem at all forgoing the s’mores. And my three friends, two of which were from out of town and one of those places being very cold Indiana, were happy to join us.

I have heard that the view is beautiful up there, but we sat in a corner booth, and didn’t see much. But we were okay with that because we were close to the Trent. As, I wrote before, Maddy had met him earlier and this time she had her ukulele with her, and of course Trent asked her to come up and play with him… and that’s what she did. That kid kills me. Apparently, I instill much confidence in my girls. There is no way I would do that or would have done that.

The entertainment was so much fun, and the peach cobbler was fantastic. My adult friends and I ended the night with a glass of port and the girls with a cup of hot chocolate.

It wasn’t a long stay, but we slept well and we felt good. I’d like to end with words from Maddy:

Tonight we watch the sun set over the rough sea from our room on floor
10 at The Kimpton. Tonight we are welcomed, we will drink our drinks,
listen to live music, and sleep comfortably
