The Buffalo Sabres are last in the National Hockey League in points with 42, and they have started to think long-term by trading goaltender Ryan Miller, who was on the roster for the U.S. national team.
According to CBS Sports, Miller was traded to the St. Louis Blues along with centre Steve Ott. In exchange, the Sabres received goaltender Jaroslav Halak, right wing Chris Stewart and left wing William Carrier. The Sabres were also given a 2015 first-round pick and a 2016 third-round pick.
Ott spent most of his career with the Dallas Stars before getting traded to the Sabres in 2012. Halak made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens before playing for the Blues in 2010. Stewart and Carrier are both young players who were taken early in the NHL draft.
Stewart has 15 goals and 26 points this season, according to NHL.
With the extra first-round pick, the Sabres may have three in the 2015 draft, which is expected to be deep.
The Blues are expected to become more serious Stanley Cup contenders since Miller will have a better defense in front of him, and the Sabres will look to take advantage of their resources and become contenders once again.
