The Carolina Panthers announced on Tuesday that quarterback Cam Newton will have ankle surgery on Wednesday and will be out about four months.

Newton has been feeling continual soreness in his ankle since the team lost a couple months ago to the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs, reports USA Today. The team noted that if everything goes to plan, Newton will be ready for the start of training camp towards the end of July.

Head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement, "We wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it."

The Panthers' team physician Robert Anderson will be performing the ankle surgery on Newton. The Charlotte Observer says a team source spoke with them and said that the ligaments in Newton's ankles had become stretched. The surgery will help tighten them back up again.

Without Newton, the offseason workouts will be lead by backup QB Derek Anderson until their star has recovered.
