At a luncheon at The Lambs Club on West 44th Street in New York City, the cast and creators of Granite Flats spoke about the series and what to expect for their Season Two premiere on April 6th.

Granite Flats is BYU’s first original scripted family friendly dramatic series, inspired by real-life Cold War events. The show takes place in 1963 in Granite Flats, Colorado. Executive Producer Scott Swofford says that there is so much great material to look at from the time period. The drama unfolds in a world of spies, townspeople, and police officers.

Actor Cary Elwes plays Hugh Ashmeade, the real life head of the CIA’s Counter Intelligence program in the 1960s. The actor says being on the series is “a real joy for us.” Elwes was previously seen on the television show in Psych and in the film, The Princess Bride. The series also features Richard Gunn, David Naughton, and Tom Wright. Emmy Award winning actor Christopher Lloyd also appeared on the series.

Executive Producer and Director Scott Swofford, a graduate of BYU, is a veteran of television production, known for his work in over 30 IMAX films in 50 countries, including the Academy Award nominated, Mysteries of Egypt, which grossed $80,000,000 worldwide and on Amazon. Other crew includes Cinematographer Reed Smoot (The Great American Cowboy), Art Director Christopher DeMuri (Touched by an Angel), and Writer John Plummer, whose previous television credits include shows on NBC, IFC, PBS, and Discovery.

The Granite Flats production team re-creates the look and feel of the 1960s Mountain West America. They have used the same set as Touched by An Angel and Everwood. The main street Main Street of Granite Flats is actually the old copper town of Magna, located on the west side of Salt Lake Valley. Other locations include the Olmsted hydroelectric power plant in Provo, Utah, located minutes away from Robert Redford’s Sundance Ski Resort.

BYUtv offers approximately 1,000 hours of original programming each year. BYUtv is available by cable, satellite, and multiple digital media platforms including apps for iPhone and Android.

Season Two of Granite Flats premieres on April 6th on BYUtv.
