The 2013-2014 television season is almost over, but the networks still have some surprises in store. Fox’s Surviving Jack is finally premiering tonight, bringing Christopher Meloni back to the broadcast networks.

The project has been in the works since last March, when it was initially titled I Suck At Girls, after Justin Halpern’s book. Bill Lawrence (Cougar Town) is one of the producers and the pilot was written by Halpern and Patrick Schumacker. Lawrence and Schumacker previously worked on CBS’ $#*! My Dad Says, but hopefully this show will live a little longer.

Meloni will be shedding that tough-guy persona he built after years on Law & Order: SVU. After leaving that show, he joined HBO’s True Blood, but this is his return to the main networks.

He plays an oncologist, who has to take care of his children after his wife (Rachel Harris) leaves for law school, notes TV Guide. The show is set in the 1990s.

Unfortunately, The New York Daily News gave the pilot a one-star review. Audiences will get a chance to see if they like it tonight at 9:30 p.m. following American Idol’s results show.
