The Cleveland Browns released quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell on Wednesday.
According to 92.3 The Fan, the team announced Weeden’s departure and then Campbell’s about 35 minutes later.
Moving the QBs off the roster has not come as a shock to anyone.
ESPN noted that Browns picked Weeden in the first round of the 2012 draft. He never panned out over his two-year tenure though, starting in just 20 games and throwing for 23 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.
"First and foremost, the Browns would like to thank Brandon and his agent for being true professionals," general manager Ray Farmer said in a statement. "The circumstances in which he found himself were not easy for him or the team. After discussions with Brandon and his agent, we'd like to give him the ability to pursue other opportunities."
The circumstance in which he found himself in was starting as a quarterback for the QB-cursed franchise. The team has not had stability or success at the position for several years.
Campbell also did not make any type of impact during his brief stay last season.
“We appreciate Jason's contributions to the Browns in 2013," Farmer said. "He's a respected veteran player in this league. We felt like at this time, early in the free-agency period, we would give him a better opportunity to move forward. We wish Jason the best in his future endeavors."
Hopefully, the Browns can soon find an answer to their QB puzzle. Some believe that answer could be veteran QB Matt Schaub, who many are speculating will be making his way there when and if he is released.
