The Cleveland Browns upgraded their running game by scooping up Ben Tate from the Houston Texans. The Browns signed him to a two-year contract. The financial terms have not been disclosed yet.
According to Washington Post, this fills a void at running back left by Trent Richardson, who was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick.
Tate rushed for 771 yards and four touchdowns last season as reported by CBS Sports. CBS Sports rated Tate No. 62 on their free agent list. Although Tate was productive in his increased playing time with starting running back Arian Foster out, he played through broken ribs.
Tate figures to be a promising starter now that he is no longer backing up Foster, and he has averaged 4.7 yards per carry throughout his career. He also showed flashes of brilliance in 2011 by rushing for 942 yards and four touchdowns on 5.4 yards per carry.
The Browns will look to improve their offense and jump into playoff contention in wake of Tate's signing.
