Comedian Conan O’Brien has been picked to host the 2014 MTV Movie Awards in April, the network said today.
The ceremony is set to take place live from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, kicking off at 9 p.m. MTV also released a short, 15-second commercial to promote the show.
"After eight years of intense negations, I am honored to announce I am hosting MTV's second most prestigious awards show,” O’Brien joked in a statement.
O’Brien is currently the host of the TBS late-night series Conan and has cultivated a large following on social media through Team Coco. The Harvard graduate previously hosted NBC’s Late Night and briefly hosted The Tonight Show.
After the nominees are announced on Thursday at MovieAwards.MTV.com, MTV plans to release a “Nominee Rundown” that will feature Our 2nd Life, which the network calls the “world's first-ever pop-culture vlogger boy group.” They will perform in shorts with games and stunts linked to the nominees.
The ceremony previously aired around Memorial Day to help launch the summer blockbuster movie season, but it was moved to April last year. Since the season now starts even earlier, it was a perfect date. The network said 3.8 million viewers tuned in. It was also streamed online and drew 1.5 million streams.
