Owner of the Detroit Lions William Clay Ford Sr., has died at the age of 88.
According to the Associated Press, the last surviving grandson of Henry Ford passed away at his home from pneumonia.
Lions President Tom Lewand released a statement following the passing of the team’s owner and chairman.
“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Mr. Ford and extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Ford and to the entire Ford family,” Lewand said. “No owner loved his team more than Mr. Ford loved the Lions. Those of us who had the opportunity to work for Mr. Ford knew of his unyielding passion for his family, the Lions and the city of Detroit.”
NBC Sports has reported that control of the team will presumably go to Ford’s son, William Clay Ford Jr., who has become increasingly active in the team in recent years. There is no reason to believe he will make any immediate changes.
Ford is survived by his wife, son and three daughters.
