The latest in teenage post-apocalyptic films, Divergent earns an impressive $22.8 million at the Friday box office.

The Divergent movie, based on Veronica Roth's novel of the same name, took home the title of top earner at the box office Friday night, pulling in an impressive $22.8 million when combined with Thursday night opening sales, reports Forbes . Divergent is the first in a three-part series from Lionsgate. While some may consider the totals a failure when compared to ultra-successful franchise Twilight ’s 2008 opening weekend, which pulled $69.6 million, or blockbuster Hunger Games which garnered $152 million, Divergent is holding its own with a slated $53 million three-day opener, reports The Hollywood Reporter . Divergent now holds the second-biggest opening of the year, behind The Lego Movie

Divergent is the story of a teen girl, played by Shailene Woodley, who rebels against the strict society in which she was born. The sequel to the film has already been green-lighted, reports MTV and Insurgent will premier in March of next year.
