HBO has decided to submit True Detective to the TV Academy as a drama, rather than a miniseries. Its rival Showtime also decided on Tuesday to switch Shameless from drama to comedy.
The decision for HBO means that True Detective will now have a harder time winning Emmys. Some of the show’s competition this year include the final season of AMC’s Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Showtime’s Homeland, notes Entertainment Weekly. Stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will also have some tough competition that includes Bryan Cranston and Jon Hamm.
True Detective could have competed in the miniseries categories, as it is an anthology show, just like FX’s American Horror Story. The show’s first season only ran eight episodes and season two will cover an entirely different story. AHS has successfully competed as a miniseries, winning several Emmys.
Deadline reported Tuesday that Shameless with Emmy Rossum will switch from drama to comedy. Executive producer/showrunner John Wells has asked the TV Academy for the switch and they approved his request.
The 2014 Emmys are scheduled for Aug. 25 on NBC.
