History announced on Tuesday that the network has renewed Vikings for a third season.
The third season will air in 2015 and be 10 episodes. History renewed the drama series early as it has only aired four of the 10 second season episodes so far, reports Variety.
The series is co-produced by Ireland and Canada and airs on History both in the U.S. and Canada, while MGM Television holds the television distribution rights everywhere else.
According to TV Guide, History vice president Dirk Hoogstra released a statement saying, "Vikings has taken viewers by storm and established itself as one of the most compelling, visually stunning dramas on television."
Production for the third season is set to begin in the summer. Michael Hirst and World 2000's Morgan O'Sullivan are executive producers for the series, while Take 5 Productions' John Weber, Sherry Marsh, Sheila Hocking, Alan Gasmer and James Flynn are producers.
The second season is currently averaging 3.4 million viewers per episode, notes The Hollywood Reporter. The show is also averaging 1.5 million in the key 18-49 demographic.
