One of the most recognizable voices on air is stepping down as NPR announced Tuesday the retirement of Carl Kasell from their Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! program.
According to The Wire, Kasell began doing segments for NPR’s comedy show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! back in 1998. Before that, Kasell was a newscaster for NPR’s Morning Edition, but retired in 2009. The almost 80 year old radio veteran left genuine feelings of joy about his career choices in a NPR statement, remarking “I can honestly say I am the luckiest man around to be able to have worked at a job I love for so many years. It’s truly been a joy for me.”
The Washington Post reports that while Kasell’s half a century long career began back when he was a newscaster and radio deejay in North Carolina. He moved on to be Morning Edition’s newscaster for 30 years.
Kasell will officially retire sometime this spring. Farewell shows are being planned for Chicago and D.C. respectively.
