Isaiah Washington will be returning to ABC's Grey's Anatomy later this season for one episode. He hasn't been on the show since season three.
His return is related to Sandra Oh leaving at the end of the season, according to Entertainment Weekly. Before being fired, Washington's character Dr. Burke left Oh's Christina Yang at the altar. He left so quickly that he only took a few personal items from his home.
"It's important to me that Christina's journey unfolds exactly as it should," creator Shonda Rhimes said. "Burke is vital to that journey -- he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Christina Yang."
The Hollywood Reporter notes that Washington first left the show after reported on-set issues as well as making anti-gay comments towards former co-worker T.R. Knight. He later apologized for the remarks.
Washington has had sporadic roles since leaving the show, appearing in Law & Order: LA and Single Ladies. He will be appearing in his first major role in a TV series on the CW's The 100, which premieres soon.
