Actor Jim Nabors, known best for his role in Gomer Pyle, has said that he will be performing again at the Indianapolis 500. This could be the last year that he performs again for a global audience of race fans.

Nabors will be singing “Back Home Again in Indiana.” His rendition of the song has become part of the tradition of the event. Although he has taken off a few years, he has been singing during pre-race since 1972. This will be his 35th performance.

According to the Associated Press, Nabors said that he “loved every minute” of singing the song. The race is scheduled for May 25. According to NBC, Nabors said in a statement, “I’ll see you all in May; but I’ve come to the conclusion that my health doesn’t permit me to travel very much anymore. So I’ll be retiring from singing ‘Back Home Again’ at the Indy 500 after this year.”

The television show, Gomer Pyle, made Jim Nabors a household name. The show was created by Aaron Ruben and followed a bumbling Marine in Mayberry, North Carolina. The show was popular in the 1960s.
