Josh Brolin recently revealed that he has dabbled with hard drugs, including heroin, in his past.
The 46-year-old came out to The Guardian, claiming he was in a surf gang called the Cito Rats while growing up in Santa Barbara.
“It was Santa Barbara. It was the 80s. It was punk rock,” he said. “You either had the children of rich, neglectful parents or children of poor, neglectful parents, so it was a mix. But we basically grew up the same way. I’ve never seen a group like that before or since.”
The son of actor James Brolin and wildlife activist Jane Cameron also said that this gang he involved himself with led him to explore drugs like heroin, the drug that recently associated in the killing of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman on Feb. 2.
Brolin said that he and the group would often rob cars to buy drugs. “I tried heroin,” he continued. “That sounds so horrible when you put it like that. But yeah, I tried heroin. I mean, I never got into it and I never died from it, which is a good thing. I’ve had 19 friends who died. Most of those guys I grew up with, they’re all dead now.”
Even though as a teenager he experimented with the hard drugs, he explained that being high was a meaningless experience for him saying now he matured.
However, on New Year’s Day in 2013, Brolin was arrested in Santa Monica for public intoxication shortly after ending his almost nine-year marriage to actress Diane Lane.
