Kate Winslet made the puzzling decision to name her new son Bear. Even though she’s talked about the name before, she explained to Ellen DeGeneres the thought process behind the unique name.
Winslet told DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she didn’t want to name her previous children - Joe and Mia - until after she saw them, reports The LA Times. “Of course this time around, there's Mia and Joe and the whole pregnancy is about what are we going to call the baby,” the Divergent star explained.
She said that they decided on Bear very early. “A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear, and I just had always really loved it and he was very much a bear -- he was everyone's shoulder to cry on, he was a big bear hug, he was just this great figure in my life -- and I just always remembered him and that's where it came from,” Winslet recalled.
Bear was born to Winslet and her husband, Ned Rocknroll, in December. His nickname is Blaze, because she met Richard Branson’s nephew after a fire.
Winslet has explained the name before and said that Bear will not have Rocknroll’s unique last name. Instead, Bear will get “Winslet” for a last name.
“Why do you think, Ellen?” Winslet joked when DeGeneres asked why. “So you wouldn't have encouraged [Ned] to change it to Rocknroll is what you're saying,” DeGeneres replied.
Winslet, who just got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, will next be seen in Divergent. The film opens on Friday.
