Lena Dunham has weighed in on the Woody Allen controversy and is siding with Dylan Farrow, who brought up the decades-old allegations that the director sexually abused her when she was young. The Girls creator says she is “disgusted” by Allen, although she disagrees with looking for hints in his films.
Dunham was a guest on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast Monday. She told Maron, “In the latest Woody Allen debate I'm decidedly pro-Dylan Farrow and decidedly disgusted with Woody Allen's behavior.” However, according to TheWrap, Dunham said she thinks that when people are looking for references to child molestation in his movies, they’re missing the “f***ing point.”
“I'm not going to indict the work,” the actress added, notes TV Guide. “I think that you can decide that you don't want to support the work of somebody who has molested a child. That's a completely appropriate choice. But going through it and saying, 'Look, he's told us in 57 ways that he rapes kids,' that's not the thing.”
For her, the hard evidence is why she is siding with Farrow. “But for me the point is not to go through his one-act plays looking for references to child molestation,” she continued. “Because I'm not comfortable living in a world where art is part of how we convict people of crimes.”
Allen was never convicted or charged and has denied Farrow’s allegations. Recently, Scarlett Johansson, who has appeared in three recent Allen films, said that Farrow was “irresponsible” for bringing the names of other actors who have worked with the filmmaker in the past.
