It was announced Saturday morning that Matt Carpenter has signed a six-year contract extension worth $52 million with the St. Louis Cardinals. The deal will keep him in a Cardinals uniform through 2019 and it includes an option for the 2020 season as well.
Carpenter, 28, played second base last year, but will shift to third base this season. According to espn the Cardinals will put rookie Kolten Wong in Carpenter’s spot at second base.
Carpenter put up great numbers for the 2013 season and made it to the all-star game. According to the cbssports Carpenter batted .318 last season and led the majors with 126 runs scored and doubles with 55.
Carpenter made his major league debut in 2011. In 2013 he not only made the all-star roster he won his first Silver Slugger Award. This made him the first winner of that award at second base in Cardinals’ history. He finished fourth in the National League MVP voting last year as well.
