No. 4 seed Michigan State triumphed over No. 1 seed Virginia in a defensive matchup, 61-59, to advance to the Elite Eight.
The game went back and forth, and Virginia held Michigan State without allowing a field goal for the first six minutes in the second half, according to USA Today.
After trailing 51-44 with 4:24 remaining in the second half, the Cavaliers went on a 7-0 run to tie the game. The Spartans then took a five-point lead with 53 seconds remaining.
Malcolm Brogdon made a three-pointer to put the Cavaliers one point behind the Spartans with two seconds left. However, Brogdon then committed a foul to give the Spartans the opportunity to extend their lead to 61-59. They ultimately held this lead and won the game.
The Spartans were led by Branden Dawson, according to ESPN. He scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Adreian Payne added 16 points.
The Cavaliers were led by Brogdon and Joe Harris, who scored 17 points apiece.
The Spartans will face No. 7 seed UConn on Sunday.
