Miguel Cabrera will spend rest of his career with Detroit Tigers, agrees to astonishing contract extension

Miguel Cabrera, easily one of the best hitters in baseball today, will likely be spending the rest of his career in a Detroit Tigers uniform. The two sides agreed to an eight-year contract extension worth around $248 million.

The news was first reported by CBS Sports and Fox Sports. Their sources confirmed that the deal is on top of the two years Cabrera has remaining on his contract. That means over 10 years, Cabrera will be earning a record $292 million. He previously signed an eight-year, $152 million deal.

The Tigers could keep Cabrera for as long as 12 years, since there are vesting options for two more years, worth $30 million each.

Fern Cuza and Diego Bentz of Relativity Baseball negotiated a record-breaking deal for Cabrera. While the Tigers have committed more money to Cabrera than the New York Yankees did for Alex Rodriguez in 2007, that 10-year, $275 million contract is still the largest single deal in MLB history.

Cabrera is just 30 and won his second AL MVP in 2013. He also earned a Triple Crown in 2012. He made his MLB debut with the Florida Marlins in 2003.
