The New England Patriots are one of many teams looking to save salary cap space, and they acted by releasing safety Steve Gregory.

Gregory started 23 regular season games for the Patriots, including 11 in the 2013 season. He made 79 tackles and defended three passes, according to NBC Sports. He did not intercept a pass though.

Gregory spent six seasons with the San Diego Chargers before signing with the Patriots. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and logged four interceptions and two sacks in his San Diego stint.

He had a career-high three interceptions in his first season in New England along with two fumble recoveries.

Gregory was entering the final season of a three-year contract he signed with the Patriots, according to NFL. The Patriots will save $2.85 million in cap space by releasing Gregory.

Duron Harmon will look to fill Gregory's shoes across fellow safety Devin McCourty.

The Patriots are expected to be prime Super Bowl contenders again as they enter the 2014 season coming off an AFC Championship loss to the Denver Broncos.
