The New York Jets released cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Sunday. He was the top cornerback for the Jets.
Cromartie had one year left in his four-year deal with the Jets. He was suppose to get a $5 million roster bonus later this month. He would have cost the Jets $14.98 million against the salary cap this season. The Jets will save $9.5 million in cap space by releasing him, according to the Associated Press. The Jets could bring Cromartie back with a lower salary unless he explores the free agency market.
“I would like 2 thank the Jets organization so much with helpin me grow as leader and a player. S/O 2 my teammates I wish u guys the best” Cromartie wrote on Twitter. “It’s time for a new chapter in my life and now it’s time to let my lord and savior lead my steps every step of the way.
Cromartie played for the Jest for four seasons, after being with the San Diego Chargers. He had the worst year of his career last year as he was plagued by hip injuries. Despite the injury problems, he still made the Pro Bowl as an alternate. He had 13 interceptions while with the Jets.
With Cromartie gone the Jets have two cornerbacks left on their roster, Dee Milliner and Kyle Wilson. According to the New York Daily News, they have expressed interest in Alterraun Verner of the Tennessee Titans. Verner though is sought after by numerous teams.
The NFL’s free agency begins on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see where Cromartie ends up.
