The New York Jets upgraded their quarterback position after hosting a visit for former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. They signed Vick and released Mark Sanchez, their former starter who struggled in 2012 before losing his job to Geno Smith and undergoing shoulder surgery.
ESPN reports that cutting Sanchez will save the Jets $8.4 million in salary cap money. He was also due a $2 million roster bonus at the end of March.
Sanchez was drafted by the Jets in 2009 with the fifth overall pick, and they reached two consecutive AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010, giving Sanchez four playoff victories. However, he threw 18 interceptions apiece in 2011 and 2012.
Vick signed a one-year deal with the Jets, according to USA Today. He will look to get his career back on track after losing his starting job to Nick Foles in 2013.
He burst back onto the scene in 2010 with the Eagles when he took over as the starter for Kevin Kolb. He led them to an NFC East title before being bounced by the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.
