Just hours after the Houston Texans signed quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the team sent Matt Schaub to the Oakland Raiders for a late-round 2014 draft pick.
Fitzpatrick was signed to a two-year deal Thursday night, which meant that the Texans had four quarterbacks on their roster for a time. Teams that were interested in trading for Schaub included Oakland and the Cleveland Browns, and it looks like Oakland jumped at the chance first.
The trade was first reported by ESPN. A source for USA Today also confirmed the news. Neither team has made the deal official as of Friday morning.
Schaub, 32, started in eight games during the Texans’ disastrous 2013 campaign. It was completely unexpected, as the year before, he led the Texans to a 12-4 record. In 2013, he threw for 10 touchdowns, but had 14 interceptions. He was booed by the fans and benched.
The trade will allow the Raiders to explore other options for their first pick in the draft. The team has the fifth overall pick. They currently have quarterbacks Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin and Trent Edwards on the roster.
The Texans have the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft.
