For the second straight year at the Academy Awards, a technical achievement in filmmaking won the most awards, but ultimately lost the top prize to a film that only won three Oscars in total. This year, Warner Bros. and Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity took home a whopping seven Oscars, but Fox Searchlight and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave won Best Picture.

The night was without any surprises, ending the 2013 awards season in anticlimactic fashion. Gravity was expected to sweep the technical awards, while Blue Jasmine’s Cate Blanchett took home Best Actress. Jennifer Lawrence’s recent awards for American Hustle ended up not meaning anything, as 12 Years A Slave’s Lupita Nyong’o won Best Supporting Actress. Dallas Buyers Club swept the male acting awards, with Matthew McConaughey taking home Best Actor and Jared Leto winning Best Supporting Actor.
