Paolo Sorrentino wins an Oscar for ‘The Great Beauty’
Italians are celebrating, delighted from the news that The Great Beauty has taken the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.
According to the Associated Press, Premier Matteo Renzi tweeted, "At this time we have to be thinking about other things, and we're doing so. But everyone is part of this Italian moment of pride for Sorrentino and `The Great Beauty.'"
It has been 15 years since Italy has won in this category. The Oscar victory topped off a fantastic year, with The Great Beauty having already taken the BAFTA and the Golden Globe. The Great Beauty features the story of Jep Gambardella and his life in Rome.
It is Italy’s 11th win since foreign language film became an Oscar category in 1956, according to Reuters. The culture minister, Dario Franceschini, said that it is important that Italy believes in itself.
Director Paolo Sorrentino said that he would be glad to meet with Dario Franceschini. On winning the award, Sorrentino thanked the Talking Heads, Fellini, Italian-American director Martin Scorsese and Argentine soccer star, Diego Maradona.
The 86th Annual Academy Awards will took place at the Dolby Theatre. The ceremony was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
