Two weeks after it was reported that defensive tackle Vince Wilfork was asking the New England Patriots to release him, the 10-year veteran has signed a deal to stay with the team for another three years.
According to The Boston Globe, the Patriots had to have Wilfork agree to lower his salary to $7.6 million and the team took a $11.6 million hit on the salary cap. ESPN reports that the deal keeps Wilfork with the Patriots for three more years.
Back on March 13, it looked like Wilfork would be leaving the Patriots to play for another team for the first time in his career, but during the NFL owners winter meetings, owner Robert Kraft made it clear that he’d like to see Wilfork stay around. He called the five-time Pro Bowler one of his “personal favorites.”
Wilfork is 32 and is coming off an injury-plagued season. He tore his Achilles tendon in Week 4 and missed the rest of the season. He was on the Patriots team that won Super Bowl XXXIX and said on Twitter that he would like to win another one. Wilfork also wrote that he’d like to retire as a Patriot.
