The Houston Rockets' point guard Patrick Beverley had an MRI exam on Friday that showed the meniscus in his right knee is torn.
Head coach Kevin McHale announced that Beverley would be out indefinitely, reports ESPN. He suffered the injury during Thursday night's game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Beverley will seek another opinion and no course of action has been determined yet. If another examination determines he did suffer a torn meniscus, he can either repair or remove it. Removing the torn meniscus can decrease the time he is out to only a few weeks, but can risk his long-term career.
The other option is to repair the damaged cartilage, but would mean he would be out for the rest of the season and the playoffs, no matter how deep the Rockets were to go.
According to USA Today, Beverley has done well during this season with the Rockets. He was averaging 9.9 points a game, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals. His presence also improves both their defense and offense in the 52 games he has started this season.
With Beverley out indefinitely, backup point guard Jeremy Lin will start in his place. The Rockets are also waiting to hear on center Dwight Howard's ankle, which he said had been bothering him.
