Actor Sean Connery spoke in support of Scottish independence in a new interview published this weekend in the U.K. Connery said that the move would only help Scotland and that it would even help bring more jobs.
Connery, 83, no longer lives in Scotland, but he offered his thoughts to the Sun before a September referendum, notes The Telegraph.
“I fully respect the choice facing Scotland in September is a matter for the people who choose to work and live there - that's only right,” Connery told The Sun. “But as a Scot with a lifelong love of Scotland and the arts, I believe the opportunity of independence is too good to miss. Simply put there is no more creative an act than creating a new nation.”
Connery is “particularly excited” by the idea that an independent Scotland could have a better arts and entertainment community. He said that voting in favor of the referendum would help bring Scotland to international attention, notes The Independent.
“There will be a renewed focus on our culture and politics, giving us an unparalleled opportunity to promote our heritage and creative excellence,” the actor added.
On Tuesday, Alex Salmond, the Scottish First Minister, will give a lecture in London and Connery is expected to make further comments in a New Statesman article.
The Oscar winning Connery is best known for his roles in several James Bond films and has not made a feature film since 2003.
