On Wednesday, March 26, 21-year-old Selena Gomez discussed her struggles with fame with a 16,000 person crowd of students and teachers at the first We Day California that took place at the ORACLE Arena in Oakland Calif.
“I’m surrounded by people who are supposed to guide me,” Gomez said according to HuffPost Celebrity. “And some of them have and others haven’t. They pressure me. There’s so much pressure. You gotta me sexy. You gotta be cute…”
She described the long list of expectations that she’s given. She explained that the people’s role it was to guide her took over. They told her what to wear, how to dress and conduct herself and she admitted that she had given in to that pressure. She explained that giving in had caused her to lose sight of who she is.
The young singer and actress then got emotional as she also admitted to making mistakes.
“I’d be lying if I said that I’ve never tried to make myself better by giving in, because I have. But I’ve learned from my actions, and for all the things I’ve done I’m proudest of that,” she said. “I’ve learned from my mistakes.”
She reached out to the students in the audience telling them that she too has had to evaluate the types of friends she’s had and the people she decided to keep in her company.
In January, the young star took a two week break as she checked herself in
Meadows, a rehabilitation center, in Arizona.
However, a representative during that time that the singer voluntarily spent time at Meadows and that the visit was not for substance abuse.
During the time, Gomez had stated that her reason was for personal issues. She had said in a statement, “I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be,” after claiming to have been putting work as her top priority for an extended period.
