Former NBA basketball star Shaquille O’Neal is a self-professed tech geek and he loves his apps. He loves them so much that he spends $1,000 on them every day or so he claims.
During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, O’Neal told WSJ reporter Evelyn Rusli at SXSW that, “I probably spend $1,000 on apps a week.”
He continued, “Last week I bought like 20 deer hunter games… I’m just a geek. When I’m not working, I spend all my money on apps.”
According to Sports Illustrated, O’Neal also claimed that he did get the late Steve Jobs’ phone number in an ill-fated attempt to get an iPhone early.
Still, the amount of money Shaq says he spends on apps is pretty astonishing. He could do it, as USA Today notes that he made over $300 million during his NBA career. However, he would have to be buying a lot of apps and spending money while using them. SI points out that Gigaom reports that the average app at the Apple App Store costs just 19 cents.
As reported last week, O’Neal is working on his own game, called Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn. Once that’s up and running, he won’t have to spend so much time with deer hunter games.
