Texas governor Rick Perry appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday from their set in Austin, Texas, where they’re in town for SXSW. He talked his future in politics as well as marijuana laws.

Perry talked about the decriminalization of marijuana, saying he thinks the punishment system in place for the drug in Texas is too harsh. Over the years, he’s lowered the penalties when people get caught with pot.

"You don't want to ruin a kid's life for having a joint,” Perry told Kimmel, Washington Post reports.

He said when it comes to “small amounts of drugs,” they’re making smarter decisions. He even said he’s friendly with noted marijuana smoker Willie Nelson.

In terms of running for president again in 2016, he hinted he might. “America is a great place for second chances," he said. Let's just leave it at that."

KVUE reports is the longest-serving governor in Texas’ history. He’s served for 14 years.
