Mardi Gras is underway in New Orleans.

The Mardi Gras celebration came to North America from Paris, according to New Orleans Online. Mardi Gras is also known as Fat Tuesday. Party-goers celebrate decadence before the ritual fasting that begins on Ash Wednesday.

During Mardi Gras, floats parade down Bourbon Street. In New Orleans, krewes arrange the festivities. Krewe is a “fanciful spelling of crew,” according to Mark Romig, president and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp., in USA Today. Each organization chooses a royal court. People celebrating in New Orleans can choose to ride on floats or cheer from the balcony. Music performances are held at the Superdome in the evening.
