The Oscars on Sunday night saw an improvement in total viewers from last year, but was unable to improve in the advertiser important 18-49 demographic, while Jimmy Kimmel Live: After The Oscars saw a nice improvement from last year.

ABC and the Academy Awards dominated Sunday night, as only CBS bothered to try and schedule any new programs. According to The Hollywood Reporter, With Ellen DeGeneres back as host for her second time in about seven years, the Oscars improved upon last year's 40.4 million with 43.0 million viewers.

The awards show unfortunately wasn't able to improve upon the key rating, performing nearly even with last year at a 12.9 in the demo. When Ellen hosted in 2007, she managed to help the Oscars snag a 14.1 rating, but it hasn't been close to that high since then.

Deadline reports that Kimmel did well in his annual post-Oscar show, averaging 6.993 million viewers, a 22 percent increase over the year before. In the demo, the late-night comedian was up 20 percent with 2.423 million in the 18-49 demo.

CBS aired The Amazing Race against the Oscars and averaged a 1.5 in the demo, even with last week's number.
