It was recently announced that Isaiah Washington will be returning to the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. Seven years ago Washington was fired from the Grey’s Anatomy for using gay slurs on the set of the popular drama.

The announcement included that Washington would be returning to the show to help wrap up the storyline of Christina Yang. Actress Sandra Oh will be leaving the show, which is why there is a need to conclude that Yang storyline. Oh will be leaving the show at the end of its 10th season in May.

Show runner Sandra Rhimes, has explained that she wants to wrap the up storyline of Yang and feature all of the elements of her character and having Washington’s character return will be a way to create a full circle.

Having Washington return to Grey’s Anatomy is not needed for the conclusion of Yang’s storyline. Yang’s character has been developing into quite an amazing person and strong woman on the show. Oh has developed the character for the past seven seasons without Washington. Fans have fallen in love with Yang and Oh is responsible for taking her character to new places and new love interests.

Yang has always been a picture of an independent woman and is a great character on the show. Her characteristics have never been driven by a romantic interest on the show, she is her own unique character and having Washington back is not necessary for the conclusion to the storyline for Yang.

His return would be disrespectful to fellow co-star T.R. Knight and the earlier seasons of the show that fans loved so much. Much of the cast of Grey’s supported the decision to have Washington leave the show. These comments also forced Knight to publicly come out before he might have been ready. It was a disrespectful event and brought tons of bad publicity towards the show.

There is a clear line between a character and an actor but for fans of Grey’s it is hard to look past the comments that Washington said towards a fellow co-worker. Washington character was beloved on the show but in the end, his comments that were said out of character will spill over into the show.

In the end, Yang should have her storyline wrapped up as the character she is after seven seasons instead of worrying about Washington. Oh’s character deserves the spotlight in her finale season on the show not Washington, who lost the respect and love of fans.
