San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was detained at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday and charged for a false report of a bomb threat.
According to ESPN, Smith was booked after he indicated he was in possession of a bomb.
Airport officials said that the 24-year-old made the claim when he was going through security and randomly selected for secondary screening.
The Sacramento Bee noted that the 49ers were aware of the incident and general manager Trent Baalke released the following statement.
"We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment."
The defensive linebacker was arrested in September on suspicion of DUI charges. He checked himself into a rehabilitation facility several days later. He is also facing weapons charges stemming from a 2012 house party at his home.
Smith was released on $20,000 bail.
The NFL has not yet announced if he will be disciplined by the league.
