While we still don’t officially know yet if there will be more misadventures of the Bluth family on Netflix, we do know that Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz will continue to work with the online streaming giant for years to come. It’s been confirmed that Hurwitz and Netflix have signed a multi-year development deal to create new projects for the company.
This is really the first deal of its kind for Netflix. While it has signed deals with studios (like the one with Disney), it had previously not signed a development deal with a single writer/producer. However, since the revived Arrested Development was such a hit for Netflix, it is clearly looking forward to working with Hurwitz again.
“We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told Deadline, which first reported the news. “Mitch’s inventive approach to Arrested Development — one of the top TV comedies of this generation — was ahead of its time, and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.”
Hurwitz’s projects will be produced by Netflix and under his Hurwitz Company banner. The deal hinges on new projects and doesn’t include another season of Arrested yet. It has been rumored that the two are talking about bringing it back for a fifth season.
Arrested earned six Emmys during its original run on Fox and its fourth season on Netflix earned three more nods.
“The fact that I'm also getting one month of their streaming right to my TV or Xbox free ... well, it really takes the sting out of buying that Xbox,” Hurwitz joked in a statement, notes CNN.
