Boston Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks was scratched from Saturday's game, and an MRI on Sunday confirmed that he has a strained right calf. The Red Sox put him on the 15-day disabled list for his injury.
According to MLB, Jonathan Herrera is expected to fill in at third base. Utility infielder Brock Holt is also considered an option, after he was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Middlebrooks was hitting 3-for-13 in four games to start the season before he strained his calf. This includes a walk and a home run.
Manager John Farrell said that he expects Middlebrooks to return to the lineup when he is eligible to be activated from the disabled list, according to ESPN.
Third baseman prospect Garin Cecchini was not called up by the Red Sox because they want him to further develop in the minors. Farrell cited his defense in particular as needing to improve. He is off to a fast start this season though, hitting 5-for-9.
