The Denver Broncos and head coach John Fox have agreed to a new three-year contract.
FOX Sports was the first to report the news of a new deal Friday evening.
According to NFL.com that the contract is not an extension, but rather a completely new deal. Fox’s current deal, which had one year remaining, was ripped up.
The new deal will reportedly pay the coach about $5.5 million per year.
Last season, the 59-year-old underwent heart surgery. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio took over the reins in Fox’s absence. The team went 13-3 and earned a trip to the Super Bowl, but was handed a crushing defeat by the Seattle Seahawks.
The Seahawks and head coach Pete Carroll also inked a deal on Friday that keeps him in town until at least 2016. Carroll’s deal pays about $7 million a year, behind only New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
The Broncos are hoping to revamp the defense this offseason. So far the team has acquired defensive end DeMarcus Ware, an addition that will certainly help.
