At least two people are confirmed dead and 293 people are missing after a ferry sank off the southern coast of South Korea on Wednesday. The ferry was headed to the southern island of Jeju.
The ferry contained over 300 students from Danwon High School in Ansan, who were on a school trip. The ferry was holding 459 people in total.
According to ABC News, a distress call was received from the ferry, named Sewol, when it had been leaning towards one side.
Some of the passengers who had been rescued from the 55 degrees Fahrenheit waters had said they believed passengers were trapped inside of the ferry.
USA Today reports the death toll could rise drastically if those unaccounted for are not rescued today, making his the worst ferry accident since 1993 in South Korea when 292 people died.
Out of the 164 people were rescued, 55 of them were injured. There are boats, helicopters and divers from the coast guard and navy are out searching for missing persons.
