The news was first reported by TVNewser and then CNN’s Brian Stelter. Terms of the deal, including the number of years added to Stephanopoulos’ contract, were not announced.
“We expect him to remain with us for many, many years. This represents what he wanted – he is committed to GMA and This Week and understands the power of those platforms,” a network spokesperson told TVNewser. “George is vital to the success of the news division and will continue to be a leader here at ABC News.”
Stephanopoulos has been co-anchoring GMA since 2009 and has been at This Week since 2011. Getting him to renew his contract was a major deal for ABC News, as he also sits in for Diane Sawyer on World News when she is off.
GMA has also seen numerous changes since it overtook NBC’s Today Show as the top morning program in the country. News anchor Josh Elliott and meteorologist Sam Champion have both left, but Lara Spencer has stayed on and was recently promoted. Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts are the show’s lead anchors.
